Reasons for ragging
Why does ragging take place? Why is it that very often, students who were at the receiving end of ragging, themselves, become the worst perpetrators of ragging? According to Antony Palackal, faculty member at the Loyola College of Social Science, Thiruvananthapuram, ragging is perpetrated mainly by those students who have a sense of deflated self-image. "Trying to gain attention or recognition is part of the psyche of the youth. So, the senior tries to win over the attention, respect, recognition... of the junior. As a young mind sees it, this is best done through domination. In practise, this gets translated into ragging," he explains.
